Pioneer VSX-1120-K 7.1 Home Theater Receiver Review

The Pioneer VSX-1120 and how it improves the home theater experience

For a home theater receiver under $500, the Pioneer VSX-1120-K 7.1 Home Theater Receiver, like its fellow receiver models, can give high standard performance and many practical functions.

Despite being relatively new in the mid-range receiver industry, Pioneer was able to release top notch receivers like the VSX-1020.  The Pioneer VSX 1120 has received most of the capabilities of its predecessor, including iPhone certified support, Dolby digital sound system and HDMI support. What this receiver brings in addition are 1080p video upscaling now brought by Marvell video processing, multi-channel PQLS, RS-232 port and option to also turn your PC into the receiver’s controller.

VSX-1120 features the same iPhone connectivity as other Pioneer receiver models, giving you iTunes access for downloading and availability of the iControlAVR phone app, which turns your iPhone into the receiver’ remote control.  You can also access the internet and internet radio stations via your 1120.  Audio performance is top notch, with the high definition sound capabilities of the previous models improved to a wider sound stage with the 1120, and distortions no longer occur with the sound at loud volumes.  Video performance has also improved because of Marvell video chip delivering better multiple noise reduction settings most of the time.

But while many of the 1120’s capabilities have improved compared to its counterparts, the unit still has its shortcomings.  As with many Pioneer receiver models, users still complain of the remote being difficult to use, especially in the dark.  Other uses complain of inflexibility of enabling volume display onscreen and fm audio reception problems.

Still, while the receiver has it shortcomings, the VSX-1120 is still worth the buy and is one of the best, affordable mid range receivers in the market.
